Brain Matter and Mangled Carpenter chart together for first time on The Implosion from Blast.FM

This is a bit of a monumental day. I'm stoked to see that two of my bands have made it onto The Blast.FM, The Implosion Loud Charts this week for the first time together.

Brain Matter enters its first week on December 6th, at #27 with Internal Unrest, and Mangled Carpenter is hanging tough in its 18th week on the charts with Lost and Found at #18. Our first Mangled Carpenter single Clawing The Ark went to #1 earlier this year and "Lost and Found" hit the top 10.

I put the official visualizer videos below the details as well as some insight behind the writing of the singles, along with their lyrics.

Congrats to my label mates from Hagah Recordings, The Charon Collective, and sister label-mates from Rottweiler Records on the Implosion this week as well: Shadowmourne (#23), The Beckoning (#11), Abated Mass of Flesh (#19), Grave Robber (#13), Light Unseen (#7), Frost Like Ashes (#14), Symphony Of Heaven (#15).

The track Internal Unrest started off with an idea from my brother, founder and bassist of Brain Matter, Kristeffor Olson, having a single line running through his head. He kept hearing "Killing me inside, it's killing me inside".

Brain Matter's lyrical focus centers a lot around mental health issues. I then took the idea and wrote the lyrics with a focus on depression and searching for the light at the end of the tunnel. Basing much of the lyrics on a particularly rough time in my life in the early 2000s where I went through several personal changes and divorce.

Internal Unrest Lyrics: Smother the lights nobody's here

Faint reflections nothing seems clear

Take this suffering out of me

No place to hide just set me free

Wrestling with inner thoughts of decay

Longing for a time of peace uncaged

When will the light shine back down on me

Drowning in my sorrows please set me free

Killing me inside

It's killing me inside

It's killing me inside

It's killing me inside

Old ways fighting to regain hold

Transfusion paradox so cold

Dual nature taking its toll

Attempting to take control

Killing me inside

It's killing me inside

Slashing my lifetime

It's killing me inside

Another day of endless rage

Sadness encompasses my cage

Looking above for an answer

Can I make this any clearer

Killing me inside

It's killing me inside

Alter this lifetime

Throw me a lifeline

It's killing me inside

The song "Lost and Found" from Mangled Carpenter is a ferociously fast and heavy tune about the story of The Prodigal Son. For this song I wanted the intro to hit hard with guitars and then fall into a blast beat first verse, encompassing some of my favorite aspects of both death metal and grindcore.

I was initially interested in the idea of how The Prodigal Son left his home and eventually went to work as a swineherd because he ran out of money and was jealous of the food the pigs were eating. A swineherd is a person who tends pigs. I almost titled the song "Swineherd" but changed it to "Lost and Found" at the last minute.

Lost and Found Lyrics:

Christ shares a tale with His disciples

Parable of two brothers explored

One who is young and another one old

Foolish son is insolent

Requesting inheritance

Tantamount to wishing dead

Father grants his son's request

Nameless Swineherd raising pigs

Squandering of everything

Extravagant spending wasteful living

Famine strikes distant land

Envious of food that pigs were eating

Foolish son is insolent

Requesting inheritance

Tantamount to wishing dead

Father grants his son's request

Nameless Swineherd raising pigs

Squandering of everything

Upon his return, father rejoices

Celebration slaughter the fatted calf

Older brother angered not impressed

It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.
