Candy Corn movie review

By Seth Metoyer, MoreHorror Candy Corn (2019) Review When you think of Halloween, you think of Candy Corn. Whether or not you enjoy or despise that overly sweet high fructose treat. Surprisingly, it somehow took this long for a horror movie to utilize the title - and the horror community is a better place now that it has one.

Candy Corn, from director Josh Hasty, is set the weekend of Halloween centering on a clique of young horrible bullies who have slated another year of special tricks, this year focused on a local loner, Jacob Atkins. When the group's tactics get out of hand, the boy is resurrected and set to to unleash his vengeance upon those who caused his demise. A current fad, maybe more of a phase, in horror today seems to be throwback horror films. Or homages to horror films of the 80's (sometimes 90's), you might say. Yes those were the days and yes there's a lot of nostalgia attached to those films. Within the horror community a lot of debate spills over about the current state of the genre. There are too many reboots, not enough original horror films, some movie's rely too heavily on paying tribute to 80's and 90's horror etc. This one does well for those who like the nostalgia of horror of yesteryear, with some added freshness for good measure. If you're a fan of John Carpenter’s earlier work mixed with the updated visions and blood soaked brutality of Rob Zombie films, you'll probably dig this entry. It's fun and a film you will be able to throw on every Halloween. The movie stars horror veterans such as P.J. Soles (Carrie, The Devil’s Rejects), Courtney Gains (Children of the Corn, Can’t Buy Me Love), Tony Todd (Candyman, Final Destination), and Pancho Moler (31, 3 From Hell). Candy Corn released through Epic Pictures and DREAD on VOD as well and Blu-ray September 17th, 2019. Get Candy Corn here now and treat yourself to some nice bonus material such as The Making of Candy Corn, Crowd Funding Scene and some interesting insights with the Director's Commentary.
