'Universal Horror Collection Volume 4' review

Universal Horror Collection Volume 4 came to life on March 17 from Scream Factory! Special features include new 2K scans, new audio commentaries, a new featurette, and much more.

In this release, Universal Horror Collection: Volume 4 upgrades four horror titles that could have remained on the back burner. Bringing these titles to Blu-ray is was win for classic horror fans as well as newer fans looking to discover some great older horror films.

The four movies look so much better than the previous release editions. The audio is DTS-HD MA mono. The mixes are pretty clean overall and the movies are subtitled in English.

Audio Commentaries are provided for each movie so you can get more details on the horrors from the vault. Night Monster has author Gary D. Rhodes give the background on Bela Lugosi. House of Horrors has historian Scott Gallinghouse give the inside tales of Rondo Hatton. He points out that that film was shot in two weeks. Night Key has Tom Weaver and Dr Robert J. Kills unlock the mysteries. The Climax gets a duet of Kim Newman and Stephen Jones. All the commentaries are very informative and add to the overall fun of the films.

Volume 4 includes four tales of terror from the archives of Universal Pictures, the true home of classic horror. This collection includes such horror stars as Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Lionel Atwill, and Rondo Hatton. Boris Karloff ignites the screen as an inventor who is kidnapped by a gang of burglars and forced to help them commit robberies in Night Key. Bela Lugosi stars in a creepy tale of strange characters, secret passages and a murderer who masters the art of “mind over matter” in Night Monster.  In The Climax, Karloff is terrifying as a mad doctor whose insane jealousy over a beautiful opera singer may drive him to murder. A giant of a man is used as an instrument of evil by a mad sculptor in House of Horrors.
