By Seth Metoyer,
This was my first time listening to The Jasta Show, even though I've been meaning to tune in for quite a while now. Jasta's band Hatebreed was a huge part of my early 2000s and I don't think I would have made it through alive without their album Perserverance (2002). It probably saved my life. No lie.
So while listening to the podcast, I decided I'd write about my thoughts afterward pertaining to the show because I liked it so much.
I immediately dug the podcast format, it's kicked back, relaxed, and basically, a couple of metalhead nerds like me just shooting the shiz with each other for an hour or two. I purposely picked the Travis Ryan episode to bust my Jasta Show cherry with because Cattle Decapitation is one of my favorite bands. These two guys are obviously Herculean in the heavy music realm and hella business smart when it comes to the music industry.
Check out some of the highlights from the show below, and be sure to check out The Jasta Show to absorb all the extra nuances that I didn't mention.
Much of the first part of the show focused on Travis voicing the villainous character Unicron‘ from the Transformers franchise. Ryan reportedly "lent his voice to several other characters for a series of vignettes to promote Hasbro Pulse‘s new line of toys celebrating the 35th anniversary of 1986’s animated big-screen adaptation of the then ‘Transformers‘ TV series, ‘Transformers: The Movie‘", according to THEPRP NEWS.
During The Jasta Show podcast, Ryan and Jamey talk about what has been cool in the Transformers world from an entertainment standpoint over the years. Trust me, Ryan is a Transformers fanatic.
The show took a bit of a fork in the road and tackled G.I. Joe fandom. Jasta couldn't play with Joe's as a kid because his Dad was a Vietnam Vet and Travis loved them as a kid, even creating a "torture chamber" for them. Sick! Why didn't I think of that? That was pretty funny.
Personally, my dad (who unexpectedly passed away last month in January, R.I.P.) didn't mind me playing with G.I. Joe's as a kid and he was also in Vietnam (he even helped me attach them to Bottle Rockets haha), but my mom also went through this whole Christian "Turmoil in the Toybox" phase. I couldn't have any toys that involved "magic" like the world of He-man and so forth. Funny how I went on to become a horror movie producer.
Travis mentioned that his childhood neighbor had a USS Flagg Aircraft Carrier, which every kid wanted. My cousin had one and I was always jealous of that little turd. Travis cited that he would like to do a G.I. Joe movie properly and Jasta thinks the business suits in the industry should allow fans to make them (as well as public domain stories to go into the public domain at around 50 years...which I am totally on board with).
I've worked in the movie industry as a writer and producer for independent films for over a decade now (check out my Seth Metoyer IMDB Page). It's interesting how in the movie industry, also, so many directors I know want to do the same with G.I. Joe, Castlevania, Transformers, and more. I think it would be rad.
Being a horror fan and producing horror films myself, I enjoyed hearing Jamey talk about Freddy vs Jason in reference to mashups. In fact, I run a horror page on most social media sites @morehorror, including Instagram and Twitter. Follow them! I also thought it was cool that Jasta recalled Scott Derrickson doing horror and Dr. Strange as well as Raimi and Spiderman.
Quite possibly my favorite part of the show was that Travis mentioned that Cattle Decapitation and other heavy bands with "blast beats and growly vocals don't equal death metal". He even stopped calling Cattle Decapitation "death metal" over a decade ago. He pushes the boundaries of music and classifies Cattle Decap as "extreme metal". My own extreme metal band Mangled Carpenter is often referred to as "deathgrind", but I also think "extreme metal" is a better descriptor for our stuff.
The two went on to discuss touring issues with Covid, the uptick in Cassettes (which Travis hates), CDs, and Vinyl. One hilarious part was when, I think it was Jamey, said, "one day someone is going to cut open a Whale and there's going to be an Adele record in there". HAHA. Best quote of the entire show. I don't want to spoil it all so go and check out the entire The Jasta Show at the links below.
Also, check out Travis Ryan's TWITCH page here. He says it's 70% a podcast and 30% gaming. I'm not a gamer but I bet it's dope listening to him and his buddies chat. I'm looking forward to catching more of The Jasta Show in the future, as well as the next Cattle Decapitation album. I can't wait.
