I'm not a huge fan of wrestling. For some reason, even though I have tried to get into it and although I really enjoyed some of the storylines, the sport just never stuck.
That being said, there's just something kind of cool about the idea of a wrestling horror movie. The idea of taking a huge badass dude and throwing in extra blood and carnage is appealing on many levels.
Right off the bat, the title WrestleMassacre opens the mind to many possibilities. Filmmaker Brad Twigg obviously went balls out with the concept and I think it was pulled off as well as could be expected. This low-budget “slasher” is something pretty much every wrestling fan who is also a horror fan should check out on principle alone.
Richie Acevedo is Randy, a seemingly strange groundskeeper with an obsession with professional wrestling. Randy is enamored with Becky (Rosanna Nelson), who is dating Owen (Julio Bana Fernandez). Randy gets busted peeping on a customer’s nude wife while she's in the shower. Randy is pretty much a loser, and with his size and love of wrestling, what's the next thing to do? Time to pull a Buffalo Bill, but instead of wanting to wear other people's skin, he puts on a wrestling outfit and begins his assault on people who've wronged him and hopes to win over Becky's affection by his wrestling rock star approach.
WrestleMassacre is pretty much what you might expect going in. Nothing groundbreaking, just some tables breaking, violence, blood, death, and some nudity. Barebones micro-budget horror. For those looking to have a deeper conversation or to glean something of philosophical substance, this isn't the place to look. Then again, it's a horror wrestling movie. It's fun overall and something that you could enjoy watching with other horror fans who also enjoy wrestling. The film is available now from Wild Eye Releasing. WrestleMassacre Synopsis:
Randy is an awkward groundskeeper who is obsessed with professional wrestling. Longing for a sense of belonging with grandiose dreams of becoming a wrestling superstar, Randy is only met with abject humiliation and alienation.
