In wake of the recent pandemic and social distancing culture that began back in March of 2020 and now October is upon us, it isn't surprising that production on a popular show like Stranger Things has been postponed. What is a bit surprising is the number of films that some of the actors from that series have been involved in during that same time. One of those actors is the main character of SPREE, Joe Keery.
The film is based around a rideshare driver who goes on a murderous rampage all for the simple purpose of attempting to get his social media numbers up and become "internet famous". It feels like an “Instagram Reels Taxi Driver” meets “Carpool Karaoke”.
Keery is fun to watch on screen as usual and carries the film in this adventure as Kunkle Kurt, known to his very, very few followers as @kurtsworld96. We also have DJ Dad (David Arquette), and his nemesis Bobby, also known as @bobbybasecamp (Josh Ovalle), a kid Kurt used to babysit who is now an online influencer.
There's a pretty cool electronic score here from James Ferraro’s in this found footage style horror thriller. There's nothing overly new to this one, but if you are looking to be mildly entertained for 92 minutes, throw this one on.
SPREE covers the bases of what could lie in wait in the form of terror with today's social media culture and wonderful technology through apps like Uber or Lyft. It gives us something to contemplate, since we don't have enough to worry about these days as it is.
